FORT MADISON, Iowa (KWQC) - Police in Fort Madison are warning the public after they have been informed of a scam going around.

The scam, commonly known as the grandparent scam, has the scammer pretending to be a grandchild and says they are in jail. They then let the person know they need bail money.

“The “grandchild” is usually very frantic and upset during the phone call,” police said in a Facebook post. “Do not send money to anyone you don’t know.”

Police also added that in Lee County, you have to go in person to present bail.
